Skincare in Your 30’s: Q&A with Neutrogena dermatologist

*#VerasQueEsPosible translates to “See What’s Possible”

I had the wonderful opportunity to get a skin analysis from dermatologist and Neutrogena expert Dr. Baum at We All Grow Summit this past March. She was incredibly thorough and addressed my skin concerns and also recommended some skincare and beauty products which are now part of my beauty regimen and make-up bag.

Skincare is at the top of my list in the beauty topic because great skin makes me feel like I can face anything! Great skin has given me confidence in many situations: when I’m asked to be a public speaker, host a beauty event, networking at various blogger parties and especially when I have one on one interviews with brands and clients.

I’m happy this time we have a professional contributor to answer all the nitty gritty questions. You’d be surprised how so many of my girlfriends are suffering from similar skin woes in their 30’s!. Thank you Neutrogena for making this exclusive interview possible!

Nicole: In my 30’s, I notice I break-out on my chin more frequently (and so do my friends!). Why?

Dr. Baum: Acne on the chin and jawline area can often be secondary to hormonal changes. Hormonal changes can also cause the breakouts whether its menstrual cycle, menopause, pregnancy or puberty as some examples. Sometimes our body just changes and there are medications to help control adult acne. What we choose to eat can affect our skin, it’s important to eat healthy in order to maintain healthy skin.

Nicole: Besides using anti-acne products, do you recommend visiting a facialist or dermatologist for hormonal break-outs?

Dr. Baum: Both, getting an appointment with a dermatologist first can help with receiving advice about your skin care regimen and more understanding of your skin type. The dermatologist, depending on your skin, will recommend visiting an esthetician to get facials.

Nicole: When suffering from a break-out and we have an important date or appointment…is it better to not wear make-up or is it OK to wear make-up even though we’re breaking out?

Dr. Baum: It depends on the person, it’s always important to feel confident and feel your best. If you feel confident in your skin, then cleansing your face and layering on some moisturizer can work. Others prefer to cover any blemishes before exiting the house. You can visit the dermatologist for a small injection of anti-inflammatory on pimples that will reduce the size within 24 hours.

Nicole: What type of products do you recommend for sporadic break-outs that will treat skin gently but kill bacteria in it’s tracks?

Dr. Baum: Neutrogena has the Pink Grapefruit line that helps with acne breakouts such as the Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Cream Cleanser. These products eliminate oil and dirt without over-drying or irritating skin. There is also Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne which has benzoyl peroxide, another great medication that fights acne.

Nicole: In my 30’s I start seeing my first wrinkles! Scary! What ingredients should I look for in products to maintain luminosity and elasticity in my skin (aka a celebrity glow)?

Dr. Baum: I always recommend looking for products with Retinol as they help renews the look of skin throughout the day, and helps to smooth wrinkles fast and diminish the look of age spots. The Rapid Wrinkle Repair Line from Neutrogena can help with this. And obviously prevention with broad spectrum SPF, which this product offers as well.

Dr. Baum: Another recommendation is the Hydro Boost Water Gel with sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15. This is made of hyaluronic acid which is another great product to hydrate and stimulate collagen production.

Nicole: Do foods really have an impact on our facial breaks outs/wrinkles or not?

Dr. Baum: Over the years’ research has shown that there is no good answer for this. I tell my patients keep yourself hydrated, eat a balance diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and good protein source and low in sugar, with high antioxidants and your skin will look the best. If there is a product you notice makes you break out, then try to avoid it as much possible.

Thank you Dr. Baum for answering some of the most pressing skin concerns of a lot of my readers!
